Résumé: |
This study investigates the relation between wildlife tourism and touristic learning processes about animal ecology. Through wildlife tourism it is possible for visitors to observe and be in contact with wild animals and this type of tourism is sometimes problematic when it is poorly managed and when nothing is done for the conservation of the targeted animal(s). However, wildlife tourism can sometimes be beneficial for animal welfare and conservation, especially when the visitors are taught about the potentially threatened or endangered species they came to observe in their natural habitat. The purpose of this study is to investigate the shark tourism industry in Gansbaai. This research will use an anthropological approach based on qualitative interviews with visitors experiencing shark cage diving tourism. We will not only examine their motivations, expectations and reactions but most importantly how they receive the conservation message that is given in two of the eight cage diving companies in Gansbaai: White Shark Projects and Marine Dynamics. |
