Urbanisation via tourism

Tourism produces urban places. These urbanisation processes are approached through different perspectives. The development of tourist resorts is analysed as urbanisation process, the touristification of metropolises is seen as “recreational turn", the global centralities of tourist resorts allow for rethinking central place theory. Finally, the analysis of the urbanity of tourist places – such as surf spots, tourist resorts or metropolises – aims at demonstrating the presence of the urban outside of the territorial form of the city.

Mobilities

Mobilities have become a central object of social science. My contribution aims at approaching them as individual systems of mobilities and places, not as different forms of mobility independent one from another. That is why mobilities are seen as a problem of « inhabiting », where lifestyles are more or less informed by mobilities: the notion “polytopical dwelling" tries to capture the mobility-informed contemporary lifestyles. Tourist mobilities are analysed as bearing a specific relationship to place, where place is interpreted as “other place" and as articulated to other forms of mobility. Furthermore, the quality of places is essentially defined by various mobilities, we therefore need to take into account the different ways humans practice places. As temporary inhabitants, they create “presential economies" of place.

Spatial turn: geographical theories, social theories

One of the contemporary issues of social science consists of the integration of the spatial dimensions of human societies in social theory. Called “spatial turn", this movement is crucial because a certain number of social realities have been conceptualised and interpreted without spatial dimensions. The rethinking of economy, politics, culture, social change with their respective “geographicities" are at stake. My research focuses on the geographicity of law, of digital technologies, of the civilisation and individualisation process. One of the projects aims at the articulation of the spatial dimensions to a theory of practice.

Inhabiting

Francophone geography has heavily invested the notion of “dwelling" or “inhabiting" for the last 20 years. The development of a geographical theory of inhabiting allows for understanding the new spatialities of contemporary societies, characterised by mobilities, globalisation, urbanity and digitality. It leads to the investigation of a specific “regime of geographicity" where specific styles and forms of inhabiting play out. Theoretically, instead of developing a purely phenomenological theory of dwelling, I mobilise practice theory and define inhabiting as “make do with space".

Digital technologies

One of the characteristics of the contemporary “regime of geographicity" is the computational assistance of everyday practices. From a geographical point of view, we can approach it as computer-assisted inhabiting (CAI). This bears new problems for mobilities, such as connexion and deconnexion issues, digital traces leaving a data trail, accessibility through digital devices. Specifically, the pervasive use of digital technologies in tourist practices raises the question of the abolition of the traditional home/away separation through instant communication.
