This course provides an introduction to contemporary geography and environmental social sciences, their questions, issues, central concepts, and positioning in the scientific field.
The practical component of the course (tutorial sessions) aims to familiarize students with reading and analyzing scientific materials in French and/or English (texts, images, maps, etc.), through work focused on defining key concepts (dwelling/living, territory, environment, scales, etc.).
This course aims to apply the theoretical and methodological knowledge of fieldwork in the social sciences acquired during the first two years of the Bachelor's program.
Students design a research project and then implement it in the field. They are supported throughout this process in order to develop their autonomy during a multi-day immersion in a city. In 2026, the fieldwork will take place in Marseille.
By providing an overview of the key contemporary issues facing the city, the course and the organization of the fieldwork focus primarily on themes related to urban nature (urban agriculture, urban planning and climate, urban wastelands, etc.).
