Dr. Josie Wittmer is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Institute of Geography and Sustainability at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. Her work investigates the social, political, and digital relations underlying urban infrastructural transformations, precarious work, and environmental health surveillance in cities in Canada and South Asia.
Drawing upon ongoing ethnographic work and long-term community partnerships in India, she is currently exploring how emerging digital interventions in the solid waste management sector are experienced by waste workers and working-class communities as deepening social, material, and informational inequalities. She is also co-investigating an international study to understand how wastewater-based surveillance data practices emerging out of the Covid-19 pandemic are transforming relationships between public health, waste, and urban governance around the world.
