Dr. phil. Julio Paulos

Julio Paulos (b. 1986, Luxembourg) is an urban geographer at the Department of Geography and Sustainability at the University of Lausanne. He is a member of the research team M3 –– Materialities | Multiplicities | Metropolis.

His research covers three main areas:

  • city planning: epistemic and political problematisations
  • urban infrastructures: ecologies and values of cultural innovation
  • participatory urbanism: public issues and technical democracy

Julio Paulos earned a BA in Human Geography from the Université de Strasbourg, and read for a MSc in Urban Geography at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, as part of the 4Cities graduate program in Urban Studies. His dissertation Making Planning Public at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin examined the democratic paradoxes of city planning in a political age characterised by the invention and rise of shared ideals.

Before coming to UNIL, he was a research assistant at the ETH Zürich from 2014 to 2018. Julio was an MCTS visiting fellow at the TU München (2017) and an invited researcher at the Centre de Sociologie de l'Innovation, Mines ParisTech (2018).

Julio Paulos is the co-chair of the thematic group Urban Studies at the Swiss Association of Geography and co-founder of the City Collaboratory; an initiative and platform for coordinating urban research in Switzerland (and beyond).
