Résumé: Cities are constantly evolving and must adapt their urban fabric through constant renovation. This entails several challenges, especially in terms of socio-economic consequences. The goal of this thesis is therefore to investigate the dichotomy whereby an intervention aimed at increasing the quality of urban space risks to become exclusive, fostering gentrification dynamics. The analysis proposed takes as case study an emblematic project of urban renewal: the Superblock in Barcelona. Specifically, the intervention implemented in the Sant’Antoni neighborhood, within the Eixample district. Through field data collection based on observations and interviews, this thesis investigate a direct correlation between the implementation of the Superblock and possible gentrification and green gentrification dynamics in the area. Findings indicate that the intervention has clearly contributed to increasing the life quality of the neighborhood, and this has helped to accentuate gentrification dynamics that however were already underway even prior to the implementation of the Superblock. The area is confronted with classical and commercial gentrification dynamics. Among these, the results identify tourism-related dynamics as the dominant factor. In conclusion, this thesis does not identify a clear and unequivocal correlation between the urban renewal project of the Superblock and the gentrification dynamics present in the neighborhood.
