LANTERN's aim is to co-design, test, validate and scale up a portfolio of interventions for a self-sufficient, low-carbon, resource-efficient Switzerland. This will be achieved through applied research and development at the interface between markets, technology, policy and society. The project will assess the relevance of socio-technical aspects, such as social practices, technology use, standards and context of use, to the sustainable energy transition in Swiss households, leisure activities and workplaces. In living laboratories, new services, programmes and policies will be designed, tested and validated at different scales (e.g. in households, institutions, neighbourhoods or cities). Impact will be measured within a holistic and systemic framework that assesses techno-economic and social effects in order to understand how changes in social practices, policies and technologies substantially support the reduction of carbon emissions and the improvement of energy efficiency and sufficiency in each Urban Living Lab. The aim is to develop and test ways of achieving the objectives of the 2050 and 2050+ energy strategies and climate plans in the areas studied by the urban living laboratories. The potential on a national scale will be established through the development of a scaling-up strategy. The project highlights ways of overcoming barriers and harnessing transition potential by working at the interfaces of systems to move together towards sustainable energy futures.
