Cargo bikes are two- or three-wheeled bicycles whose load-bearing capacity makes them ideal for transporting children or equipment. In recent years, sales of cargo bikes have been booming in Switzerland.

This project analyses the potential of cargo bikes, both for private use and for goods delivery. To this end, two surveys were developed: one on the use of cargo bikes among 1,000 users throughout Switzerland, and the other on online delivery preferences among 2,000 students at UNIL-EPFL. The former showed that cargo bikes have a strong effect on reducing car travel, but that the practice remains fragile due to the lack of cycling infrastructure.
