The main aim of QUALISCAPES is thus to assess tipping points in Baukultur qualities as a basis for activating placemaking, i.e., an intentional change in the cultural landscape to create a sense of place. We hypothesize that (1) sense of place is highly dependent on Baukultur qualities, in particular beauty, social diversity and cohesion, the context with its geographic, social, ecological, and economic setting, as well as civic participation, and (2) that Baukultur is a key factor in ensuring that cultural landscape changes do not cross such tipping points, i.e. non-linear changes in the dynamic and complex interactions between natural and socio-cultural factors leading to significant loss of sense of place.
