As part of an SNSF project (duration: 2024-2028) focusing on interdisciplinary research in the Ipassa Forest Reserve in Gabon using a historical ecology approach, we propose to extend two studies planned for the project, namely those on archaeology and history. We suggest increasing the number of carbon-14 datings and making an additional visit to the archives of a Catholic mission in Gabon. The results will provide a better understanding of: 1) land use over time and enable in-depth analyses of forest ecology, and 2) the establishment of scientific research in the Ipassa Forest and its relationship with the Catholic mission, researchers, and former forest dwellers who lost their village territories during the colonial era. This project marks the beginning of a long-term study of the forest, with its interdisciplinary innovations.
