The city of Biel is on the edge of the lake to which it has given its name. However, and unlike other cities such as Lucerne or Lugano, it grew away from it. Nowadays, this town that has had many episodes of economic decline is booming and desires to change its image. For this purpose, its relationship with the lake is redefined : the lake that the city left behind, must now be fully integrated into the urban landscape.
This thesis is an analysis of the past, present and future urban report between the town and the lake in the city of Biel. It tackles aspects related to public spaces by raising three main questions : why has the city developed separately from the lake? Why is there a desire to now bring them closer? And what measures and strategies regarding the public space are considered to participate to this intergration?
The analysis is established on the notions developed in the theoretical part of this work. Based on the concept of public space, it sets in different dimensions and identifies its goals and principles of requalification. Associated with the results collected in the empirical part of this study, it can also suggests some ways to bring the lake closer to the city.
