The project aims to empower museums and performing arts institutions globally to lead the transition towards sustainability by leveraging their public visibility and role as multipliers of awareness and action. It acknowledges the fragmented and limited nature of current sustainability efforts in the cultural sector and seeks to develop a coherent approach that integrates existing initiatives while considering the specific contexts of cultural institutions.

Key Deliverables:

  1. Sustainability Framework and Management System (SMS):
    • Tools for measuring, monitoring, and managing sustainability progress.
  2. Sustainability Label:
    • A governance structure for recognition, partnerships, and visibility.
  3. Curriculum and Qualification Program:
    • Capacity-building initiatives for integrating sustainability in cultural institutions.

Approach:

The project will collaborate with a global community of practice, uniting institutions, policymakers, funders, and associations to co-develop, validate, and implement its deliverables. The creation of the Alliance Culture for the Planetwill ensure the continuation of these efforts with a sustainable business model beyond the project's duration.

Contributions:

  • Scientific: Development of the first sector-specific framework for sustainability indicators in museums and performing arts.
  • Practical: Offering consistent guidance, standards, and empowerment tools for cultural institutions to operationalize sustainability.
  • Collaborative: Engaging global partners and an advisory panel to co-produce solutions and disseminate findings.

This initiative represents a significant step towards embedding sustainability in the cultural sector, combining interdisciplinary research, practical innovation, and global collaboration.
