The highly "rurbanized" south Indian state of Kerala has often been understood as a "model" of development due to a variety of historical, socio-cultural and political factors. The short-term aim of this project is to develop a collaborative research proposal on environmental change, governance and politics in small cities in Kerala from an urban political ecology perspective with the assumption that Kerala may hold lessons for other developing and fast urbanizing areas. The longer-term goal is to build a sustainable research partnership the involved researchers and their respective institutions; i.e., the Institute of Geography, University of Lausanne (IGUL) and the Centre for Technology Alternatives in Rural Areas (CTARA), Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay.
