CIHRF and Public History

Jean-Loup Kastler has served as Secretary-General of the International Commission for the History of the French Revolution (CIHRF) since 2026, following his tenure as Treasurer from 2022 to 2026.

In this capacity, he designed and manages the Commission's website. He also created an international mailing list devoted to revolutionary studies, which now brings together more than 200 contacts.

In 2026, together with Pierre Serna and Christy Pichichero, he co-founded the Zeev Sternhell Prize for the History of the French Revolution. The creation of this prize has been accompanied by efforts to establish an endowment fund for the Commission, dedicated to the history and memory of the French Revolution.

His public history activities also include:

  • organising conferences on women, the environment, and the Revolution;
  • publishing and disseminating the resulting contributions online;
  • coordinating the French translation of Peter Linebaugh's The Magna Carta Manifesto;
  • co-authoring a multilingual booklet on the Day of the Tiles;
  • contributing to a commemorative project led by the City of Grenoble, which resulted in the installation of a plaque highlighting women's role in the origins of the Revolution.
