Jean-Loup Kastler studies the historical relationships between local forms of democracy, collective rights, and the management of natural resources. His research focuses in particular on land and water commons, collective practices relating to water, and the ways in which environmental conflicts contribute to the political mobilization of local populations.
This approach combines environmental history, "history from below," political anthropology, and the study of shifts in scale.
